Kirkin' O' the Tartans 10-27-2013
The Kirkin' O' the Tartans (kirk means church) is strictly a Scottish/American tradition practiced in all of North America to celebrate Scottish heritage as it relates to the Presbyterian Church. The Kirkin' ceremonies are varied. However, the procession begins with the Pipers, the Piper Major, and the banners, each depicting a specific Tartan. During the service, scriptures are read, hymns are sung, and a message is delivered. There is a traditional prayer to bless the Tartans (families), acknowledge the contributions of the Scots to the Presbyterian Church, and to celebrate the freedoms we sometimes take for granted. Following the Kirkin' service, there is usually a celebration of fellowship to renew old friendships and engage in a variety of refreshments. This Sunday we also said a fond farewell to Samantha Barnes Daniel who has been an outstanding soloist with our choir for the past four years. She will be missed . . .
